Professor of Informatics
Kurt Squire is a Professor of Informatics at UC, Irvine. His research interest is in making learning meaningful and engaging with technologies, drawing from video games. He is former co-director of the Games + Learning + Society Center, where he led a team of 50+ developers, academics, and educators exploring the future of learning with games, as described in Making Games for Impact (MIT Press). He is the author of over 100 scholarly publications and his research has been supported by the MacArthur, National Science, and Gates Foundations, in addition to the National Institutes of Health and Department of Education. He is the co-creator of over 20 learning software projects with partners that include At Play in the Cosmos with Norton Publishing, ARIS with Field Day, Citizen Science with Filament Games, and Studio K with Microsoft Games. Squire’s dissertation research was on learning with the Civilization franchise, and previously he co-wrote the Applied Game Theory column with Henry Jenkins for Computer Games magazine. His work has been profiled on PBS, Wired and other national venues.
